Next week on Monday the 27th there will be a webinar on "Using an Additional Language as the Medium of Instruction: Transition in Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education" The Webinar will be led by Dr Agatha van Ginkel who I happen to know as we both speak the same mother tongue: Dutch! Dr van Ginkel has a wide experience on as well the grassroot level as in national and international level projects. Highly recommended! Using an Additional Language as the Medium of Instruction: Transition in Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education Join us for a Webinar on January 27 This webinar will explore best practices regarding the effective introduction of additional languages in mother tongue-based multilingual education. The presentation will explore the conditions and competencies necessary for learners and teachers to be successful in teaching and learning using an additional language. Often called "transition", we will look not at leaving one language behind in favor of another but at the introduction of a new language as the medium of instruction into a multilingual classroom. Additionally, the talk will provide recommendations for program planning and areas of further research. Our presenter, Dr. Agatha van Ginkel, is a consultant for SIL International's Africa Area. Most of her career has centered on the areas of literacy and languages, and aspects of first, second, and foreign language acquisition. Recently, much of her attention has been focused on multilingual literacy in Africa. She has been involved in planning, monitoring, and evaluating mother tongue-based (multilingual) education programs in over 20 languages in Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana and Nigeria.
